These Hungarian pancakes aka palacsinta are not as delicate as crepes, and not nearly as fluffy as American pancakes are, nonetheless they’re divine!
What I love the most about Hungarian pancakes is how versatile are them! The filling options are particularly endless!
Sweet pancake filling ideas:
- Apricot jam
- Strawberry jam
- Sour cherry jam
- Cottage cheese
- Cocoa powder
- Hazelnut cream or Nutella
- Sour cream
- Vanilla custard
- Ground poppy seed with powdered sugar
- Ground walnut
Savory pancake filling ideas:
- Ham and cheese
- Mushroom, ham, and cheese (optionally sliced hot pepper)
- Minced, shredded meat (eg.: Hungarian Hortobagy Pancakes)
- Spinach and ricotta
- Cottage cheese and dill
Topping ideas:
- Whipped cream
- Powdered sugar
- Chocolate sauce
- Vanilla custard
- Fruit sauce
- Caramel sauce
- Crushed nuts
- Maple syrup
- Ice cream
Here in Hungary, pancakes are not so much breakfast items, more like a Sunday main dish or dessert types.
There is nothing like the smell of cooking pancakes on a lazy Sunday. That amazing scent fills the whole house, making everybody even more hungry. And I already planning what filling will I choose. It’s absolutely priceless.
Apple Cinnamon Pancakes
Of course, these Apple Cinnamon Pancakes are more filling and denser than the regular ones and it narrows the filling choices down a little bit.
Personally, I love the Apple Cinnamon Pancakes with sour cream or apricot jam, but really, it’s up to your preferances when it comes to filling and topping selection.
You can switch the apples up with pearls, and you can add pumpkin spice to the mixture or just simply a pinch of star anise to spice it up!

- Add the cinnamon, brown cane sugar, and the salt to the flour.
- Crack the eggs, add them to the flour too.
- Pour the milk, oil, and the sparkling mineral water on the previous ingredients.
- Peel and core the apples.
- Grate them in the mixing bowl.
- Mix everything well.
- Heat a crepe pan, spray on or brush it with some oil if needed.
- Pour a ladle-full of pancake mixture into the middle of the pan, rotate the pan so the mixture spread evenly.
- Cook them on the first side for 1 1/2 minutes, flip them, then cook them on the other side for 1 more minute.
- It makes about 12-14 pancakes.
- After the last one is done, use the filling and topping of your choice, roll it up! I used sour cream for the filling and whipped cream for topping.

Oh yum! I’m usually more of a savoury person but lately I’ve had such a sweet tooth. These look delicious.

These sound so good!! I haven’t had apple cinnamon pancakes before but I’m a big fan of that flavour so I’m sure I’d love them! After reading this I feel like I’m so boring with my pancakes toppings! I haven’t had many savoury pancakes before, I think I prefer the sweeter ones. Fab post, thank you for sharing
